William H. Spurgeon

William Henry Spurgeon, known as Uncle Billy, was a pivotal figure in the founding of Santa Ana, California, where he served as the first mayor. Born in 1829 in Kentucky, he traveled extensively during the California Gold Rush, eventually settling in Santa Ana in 1869. With an initial investment of $1,000, he acquired land and established the city, addressing local challenges by planting trees and building the first general store. Spurgeon was influential in the community, founding the First National Bank of Santa Ana and serving in various political roles, including as a county supervisor. His legacy includes the W.H. Spurgeon Block, the largest building in Santa Ana at the time of his death in 1915.
