Washington Square Arch

The Washington Square Arch in Washington Square Park was designed by architect Stanford White and constructed between 1890 and 1892 to commemorate the centennial of George Washington's 1789 presidential inauguration. The white marble triumphal arch replaced an earlier temporary arch and features sculptural groups added in the early 20th century. It has been a focal point for public gatherings, performances, and civic expression in Greenwich Village since its completion.
