Third Avenue Elevated (Manhattan section demolished 1955)

The Third Avenue Elevated Railway ran above Third Avenue in Manhattan from the late 19th century until the Manhattan portion south of 149th Street ceased passenger service and was dismantled in 1955; the last Manhattan trains ran on May 12, 1955. Its removal eliminated an elevated transit structure that had cast shadows and noise along Third Avenue and changed streetscape and transit patterns in Midtown and the East Side. Sections of Third Avenue that were once under the El are now open to sky and developed with mid-20th-century office and residential buildings.
