Mission San José and Fray Antonio de Olivares

Mission San José, established in the early 18th century, was founded and developed by Franciscan missionaries including Fray Antonio de Olivares, who was a central figure in the founding of San Antonio. The mission complex is noted for its large stone church and elaborate carvings, and much of it is preserved within San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Records link Olivares to the planning and establishment of San José as part of the mission system that supported the civilian settlement.
