Chicago Great Western Railroad-Waterloo Freight Depot

The Chicago Great Western Railroad-Waterloo Freight Depot is a historic site in Waterloo, Iowa, showcasing the city's rich railroad history. Established in 1887, it was part of the Chicago, St. Paul & Kansas City Railroad, which was the first to place its depots downtown. The depot features distinctive architectural elements, including round arch freight doors and a limestone foundation. Although the original passenger depot was demolished in 1973, the freight depot remains a significant landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1997. Currently owned by the City of Waterloo, it serves as the Center for Urban Education for the University of Northern Iowa, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers alike.
