Ankeny Pumping Station

The Ankeny Pumping Station, located in Portland, Oregon's Tom McCall Waterfront Park, is a significant piece of the city's sewage infrastructure. Established in 1929, it originally featured 11,000-volt equipment and has played a crucial role in transferring sewage under the Willamette River to the larger Sullivan's Gulch plant. With a capacity to pump up to 80,000 gallons of sewage per minute, the station was integrated into the park's design in the 1970s, where it is discreetly screened by a sculptural wall and trees, making it an interesting blend of engineering and public space.
