United States Supreme Court Building - architectural and sculptural program

The United States Supreme Court Building was designed by architect Cass Gilbert and was occupied by the Court beginning in 1935. The building houses the Supreme Court’s courtroom, the Court’s offices, and a large law library. Its exterior and interior include classical architectural sculpture, friezes, and inscriptions intended to symbolize the rule of law. The building is open to the public for tours and observation of courtroom proceedings when the Court is in session.
