Acequia Madre de Valero (San Antonio)

The Acequia Madre de Valero is an 18th-century irrigation canal in San Antonio, Texas, constructed by Spanish settlers and local Indigenous peoples. Established to support agriculture and provide water to the area's missions, it was a crucial part of a larger 45-mile irrigation network initiated by Franciscan priests. The canal, which runs from Brackenridge Park to Hemisfair, showcases traditional Spanish engineering with its limestone lining. Restored in 1968, it is recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is significant for its historical role in the development of San Antonio's agricultural practices.
