Katy Freeway's 'world's widest' reputation

The Katy Freeway (Interstate 10 west of downtown Houston) underwent a major widening project completed in the late 2000s that expanded some sections to as many as 26 lanes when including frontage roads. That dramatic width has been widely reported and frequently becomes a point of local humor, with Houstonians joking about crossing dozens of lanes.
