Charles Sweeney Cabin

The Charles Sweeney Cabin, located within the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, is a historic structure significant for its association with the site of General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War. Built between 1830 and 1840, this single-story, one-room cabin served as a residence for Charles Sweeney and his family, and is notable for its connection to the Sweeney clan, including the famous banjo player Joel Sweeney. The cabin features a loft, a fireplace, and a unique post and beam construction typical of 19th-century rural Virginia. It has been restored and is in good condition, offering visitors a glimpse into the past and the historical events that unfolded in this area.
