Sunderland Orphan Asylum

Opened in 1861, the Sunderland Orphan Asylum was established to educate male orphans of seafarers, teaching them seamanship while they wore naval-style uniforms. Designed in an Italianate style by architects Charles and Lucas, the building is a Grade II listed structure, along with its gates and railings. The asylum was governed by prominent local figures and funded through railway access rights, making it a significant part of Sunderland's history and community.
