The Sphere (Fritz Koenig)

The Sphere is a large bronze sculpture by German artist Fritz Koenig that was installed in the plaza of the original World Trade Center in 1971. It was heavily damaged during the September 11, 2001 attacks and recovered from the rubble with visible pockmarks and deformation. After being displayed in Battery Park as a temporary memorial, it was reinstalled in Liberty Park adjacent to the National September 11 Memorial in 2017. The sculpture is treated as a surviving artifact of the original World Trade Center complex.
