Hancock House (Bluefield, West Virginia)

The Hancock House, also known as Alpha House, is a historic mansion located at 300 Sussex Street in Bluefield, West Virginia. Built in 1907 for Ora and Charles Benjamin Hancock, a self-made millionaire, the house reflects the American Foursquare architectural style and features Colonial Revival details. It served as a private residence until 1962 when it became the chapter house for the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, making it the largest house owned by African Americans in the region. The fraternity transformed the house into a cultural center during segregation, hosting events and notable performances, including one by Duke Ellington. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, Hancock House is a significant landmark that showcases the rich history of the area and its architectural heritage.
