University of Texas Main Building (UT Tower)

The University of Texas at Austin Main Building, commonly called the UT Tower, is a 307-foot campus landmark that includes an observation deck and is routinely illuminated for university events such as commencements and athletic victories. On August 1, 1966, the tower was the location of a mass sniper attack carried out by Charles Whitman; the incident is widely documented and influenced subsequent campus security and law enforcement practices. The Tower remains a prominent visual and symbolic feature of the UT Austin campus.
