The University named for William Marsh Rice

Rice University was founded in 1912 as the William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Letters, Science, and Art using the endowment of Houston businessman William Marsh Rice. The university's campus is centered in Houston and continues to bear Rice's name in recognition of his bequest. The institute's creation followed legal proceedings after Rice's 1900 murder, which delayed the establishment of the school.
