The Alamo - fossiliferous limestone walls

The Alamo’s chapel and long barracks are built from local fossiliferous limestone; visitors can observe embedded marine shell fossils in some of the stone blocks. The building stone derives from Cretaceous-age limestones in the region that contain abundant marine invertebrate fossils. Preservation work and exposed masonry make these rock features visible to the public.
