Fort Negley - Civil War stone fortification

Fort Negley is a Union-built Civil War fortification constructed beginning in 1862 after Union forces occupied Nashville. The site consists of extensive earthworks and surviving stone walls and is commonly cited as one of the largest inland stone forts constructed during the Civil War. Historical records document that United States Colored Troops and many formerly enslaved and free Black laborers were involved in the fort's construction. The remains and reconstructed sections are preserved today as Fort Negley Park.
