Corcoran Gallery of Art (former museum)

The Corcoran Gallery of Art was founded in 1869 as one of Washington, D.C.'s oldest private art institutions and operated as a major gallery for nearly 150 years. In 2014 the Corcoran closed as an independent museum; much of its permanent collection was transferred to the National Gallery of Art. George Washington University acquired the Corcoran's historic Flagg Building and integrated the Corcoran College of Art + Design into the university. The former museum building remains a landmark at its original downtown location.
