Brooklyn Bridge

Opened to the public on May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first steel-wire suspension bridge and at completion was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It was designed by John A. Roebling; after his death his son Washington Roebling oversaw construction with significant contributions from his wife Emily Warren Roebling. The bridge's Gothic-style stone towers and cable-stayed design have made it an enduring engineering and cultural landmark connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn.
