Kragsyde

Kragsyde was a stunning Shingle style mansion located in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, designed by the renowned architectural firm Peabody & Stearns and built between 1883 and 1885. Commissioned by George Nixon Black Jr., the mansion was celebrated for its dramatic oceanfront setting and innovative design, featuring a broad 'V' shape to maximize views and capture sea breezes. It included a grand porte cochere, a loggia, and expansive terraces overlooking Lobster Bay. Although the original structure was demolished in 1929, its legacy continues with several subsequent homes built on its foundations, and a replica created in Maine. The surrounding landscape was designed by the famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, adding to the site's historical significance. Today, Kragsyde remains an icon of American architecture, attracting interest from tourists and researchers alike.
