2016 Downtown Dallas Ambush of Police during Protest (El Centro College vicinity)

On July 7, 2016, a gunman opened fire during a protest in downtown Dallas, killing five police officers and injuring several others; the shootings were carried out from elevated positions near the El Centro College campus. The shooter, Micah Xavier Johnson, was later killed by an explosive device delivered by a police robot after a prolonged standoff. The attack was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the September 11 attacks and prompted changes in tactics and equipment for many police departments.
