Burning of the White House (War of 1812)

On August 24, 1814, British forces set fire to the Executive Mansion (now called the White House) during the War of 1812, causing extensive interior damage. First Lady Dolley Madison is documented as saving a portrait of George Washington and other valuables before the evacuation. The building was repaired and reconstructed in the years following the attack.
