San Jose State University 'Speed City' track legacy

San Jose State University's track program, nicknamed 'Speed City' and coached by Bud Winter, produced multiple Olympic medalists in the 1960s. Notable alumni who medaled at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics include Tommie Smith (gold, 200 meters), John Carlos (bronze, 200 meters), and Lee Evans (gold, 400 meters). Lee Evans set a world record in the 400 meters at the 1968 Olympics while representing San Jose State.
