Lombard Street (crooked section)

The famous one-block, eastbound section of Lombard Street between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets features eight tight hairpin turns designed and paved in 1922 to reduce the steep 27% grade for vehicle traffic. The landscaped, brick-paved switchbacks have become an iconic, heavily photographed city landmark and are managed for one-way vehicular traffic. The block is a public roadway with sidewalks and viewing areas used by pedestrians and tourists.
