Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption (modernist cathedral)

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, commonly called St. Mary's Cathedral, was completed in 1971 and serves as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. The building is noted for its modernist, saddle-shaped concrete roof and circular plan, a departure from traditional cathedral forms. It replaced the original Cathedral of St. Mary that was damaged in the 1906 earthquake and later demolished. The cathedral is an active parish and hosts major diocesan liturgies and civic events.
