Aviary (Lynchburg, Virginia)

The Aviary, a historic building located in Miller Park, Lynchburg, Virginia, is a stunning example of Queen Anne architecture, built in 1902. Designed by the local firm Frye & Chesterman, this unique multi-sided structure was a gift from Randolph Guggenheimer of New York City. Originally home to a variety of exotic animals, including monkeys, alligators, and colorful birds, the Aviary later transitioned to serve as a branch library and an office for the city's Department of Parks and Recreation. Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, making it a noteworthy stop for tourists and researchers interested in local history and architecture.
