Oak Glen (Portsmouth, Rhode Island)

Oak Glen is a historic house located at 745 Union Street in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, notable for its distinctive 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure and gambrel roof. Built around 1870 by Samuel and Julia Ward Howe as a summer retreat, it features a cottage from circa 1850 that was already on the site. Julia Ward Howe, renowned for writing 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic,' made Oak Glen her permanent residence after her husband's death in 1876, living there until her own passing in 1910. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history and architecture.
