Old State House balcony reading of the Declaration

On July 18, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was publicly read from the balcony of the Old State House in Boston, an event commemorated at the site. Popular accounts sometimes imply the Old State House was the sole or primary location for revolutionary proclamations in Boston, but public readings and gatherings occurred at multiple city locations. The Old State House building today operates as a museum at its historic site.
