Academic Hall

Academic Hall, the original main building of the University of Missouri, was dedicated in 1843 and tragically destroyed by fire in 1892. This historic structure featured six iconic Ionic columns, known as The Columns, which now stand as a symbol of the university on Francis Quadrangle. Built from local materials, Academic Hall served educational and administrative purposes and played a significant role during the Civil War, housing soldiers and Confederate prisoners. The fire that consumed the building was reportedly sparked by the first electric light bulb west of the Mississippi River. Despite plans to demolish the surviving Columns, public outcry preserved them, making them a cherished landmark and a testament to the university's rich history.
