Cootapatamba Hut

Cootapatamba Hut is a historic survival shelter located in the scenic river valley south of Mount Kosciuszko in New South Wales' Kosciuszko National Park. Originally constructed in the 1950s by the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Authority, the hut serves as a crucial refuge for hikers descending from the summit during inclement weather. Its bright red exterior makes it easily identifiable from afar. In 2019, the hut underwent a significant reconstruction to preserve its heritage status, resulting in a modern replica built with steel supports. The hut features two entrances, including a unique rooftop access for use during heavy snowfall, making it an interesting stop for tourists and researchers exploring the region's natural beauty and history.
