Market House (Omaha)

The Market House, located on Capitol Avenue in Downtown Omaha, was a significant yet controversial fresh produce, meat, and fish market that took nearly 40 years to establish, finally opening in 1904. Despite its initial promise, the building was occupied by the local National Guard for almost two decades and was ultimately demolished by 1930. The concept of a market square in Omaha dates back to the 1860s, reflecting a long-standing desire for a communal trading space akin to those found in European towns. Various proposals emerged over the decades, but it wasn't until the early 1900s that the Market House was realized, showcasing local brick and designed to accommodate numerous vendors. Although it was short-lived, the Market House represents a fascinating chapter in Omaha's urban development and community aspirations.
