Grumblethorpe

Grumblethorpe is a historic house located in Germantown, Philadelphia, built in 1744 by merchant John Wister. Originally a summer residence, it became the family's year-round home during the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793. The house served as a headquarters for British General James Agnew during the Battle of Germantown in 1777, where he was mortally wounded. The Wister family lived there for over 160 years, and the property was known for its productive gardens and farming. Restored in the 1960s, Grumblethorpe now operates as a museum within the Colonial Germantown Historic District, showcasing its rich history and significance in American horticulture and the Revolutionary War.
