Heron's Head Park and the buried Islais Creek estuary

Heron's Head Park is a restored tidal marsh on former industrial fill at the mouth of the historically large Islais Creek estuary, an urban stream that was largely buried and filled as the city developed. The park's restoration re-established tidal channels and salt marsh habitat on land that had been heavily modified, illustrating the anomaly of a functional estuarine environment reclaimed inside a dense urban industrial area. The site provides habitat for shorebirds and fish despite its location adjacent to port facilities and the city grid.
