Toast Rack (building)

The Toast Rack, located in Fallowfield, Manchester, is a striking Modernist building completed in 1960, originally serving as the Domestic Trades College. Designed by architect Leonard Cecil Howitt, its unique hyperbolic paraboloid shape earned it the nickname 'Toast Rack' due to its resemblance to the kitchen item. The building, which stands seven stories tall, features a playful yet functional design that accommodates various class sizes. It was opened by Princess Margaret in 1962 and has been recognized as a Grade II listed structure for its architectural significance. After the closure of the Hollings Campus in 2013, the building was sold in 2014, with plans for redevelopment into residential and leisure spaces, making it an interesting site for tourists and researchers alike.
