Archaeological remains at Emancipation Park (Freedmen's Town)

Emancipation Park sits within Houston's historic Freedmen's Town (Fourth Ward) and was founded in 1872 by formerly enslaved people. Archaeological investigations conducted during park renovations have documented subsurface features including 19th-century domestic foundation remains, privy pits, and artifact assemblages associated with the neighborhood. Those recovered features and artifacts were recorded to inform preservation and interpretation of the Freedmen's Town landscape.
