Pohjola Insurance building

The Pohjola Insurance building, located at the intersection of Aleksanterinkatu and Mikonkatu in central Helsinki, is a stunning example of Finnish national romantic architecture, designed by the renowned firm Gesellius, Lindgren & Saarinen and completed between 1899 and 1901. Originally serving as the headquarters for the Pohjola Insurance Company, the building features a striking façade made of rough-hewn soapstone and red granite, adorned with intricate sculptures inspired by Finnish folklore, including figures from the Kalevala. A notable architectural highlight is its corner tower topped with a pinecone-shaped roof. The interior boasts rustic motifs, including a grand circular staircase and decorative elements that reflect Finland's natural heritage. Although it has undergone changes over the years, including its acquisition by Kansallis-Osake-Pankki in 1972, the building remains a significant landmark in Helsinki, offering a glimpse into the city’s architectural history and cultural identity.
