Waterfront and Hyde Street Pier maritime archaeology

Archaeological investigations and monitoring along San Francisco's waterfront, including work associated with Hyde Street Pier and Aquatic Park, have documented 19th‑century wharf timbers, shipbuilding and shipfaring artifacts, and material related to the Gold Rush‑era waterfront. The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park preserves historic vessels and houses many maritime artifacts recovered during waterfront excavations and conservation projects. These collections support interpretation of the city's maritime archaeological record.
