Brooklyn neighborhood and the Harvey B. Gantt Center

The Harvey B. Gantt Center occupies land that was once Charlotte's Brooklyn neighborhood, a predominantly African-American community demolished during 1960s urban renewal and the construction of I-277. The displacement of residents, businesses, and churches from Brooklyn is a well-documented and contested chapter of Charlotte's history. The Gantt Center, which opened in 2009, was created to preserve and present African-American art and culture and to acknowledge that local history.
