Turku Barracks

The Turku Barracks, constructed between 1830 and 1833 in Kamppi, Helsinki, served as a military facility for the Russian army. Originally designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, it featured a main building and several side structures, with an exercise field that later became Narinkka square. The barracks were destroyed during the Finnish Civil War in 1918 and were not rebuilt, leading to the area being repurposed for sports and other uses. In 1935, the Lasipalatsi building was erected on the site, which has since evolved into a cultural hub. The remaining structure was transformed into the Culture Barracks, opening in November 2023, featuring cinemas, restaurants, and event spaces, making it a vibrant destination for tourists and researchers alike.
