Jefferson Memorial (John Russell Pope, Pantheon-inspired)

Designed by architect John Russell Pope and completed in 1943, the Jefferson Memorial is a domed neoclassical structure explicitly modeled on the Roman Pantheon. The memorial contains a 19-foot bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson by sculptor Rudulph Evans and panels inscribed with passages from Jefferson's writings. Located on the Tidal Basin, the memorial is a prominent example of 20th-century neoclassical commemorative architecture in Washington, D.C.
