Ward Homestead

Ward Homestead, located in Maplewood, New Jersey, is a significant landmark designed by renowned architect John Russell Pope and the Olmsted Brothers. Established in 1922 as the Marcus L. Ward Home for Aged and Respectable Bachelors and Widowers, it was funded by the fortune of Marcus L. Ward, a prominent figure in New Jersey politics. The home, built in a striking rusticated gothic style, opened in 1927 and has since evolved, admitting women in the 1980s and expanding in the 1990s. Today, known as Winchester Gardens, it retains its historic charm while offering modern accommodations amidst beautiful grounds.
