Murder of Stanford White at Madison Square Garden rooftop

On June 25, 1906, architect Stanford White was shot and killed by Harry K. Thaw at the rooftop theatre of the second Madison Square Garden, located at Madison Avenue and 26th Street. The killing occurred during a performance and became a sensational national story tied to Thaw's claim of avenging his wife's honor. Thaw was tried for the murder and found not guilty by reason of insanity; the site is now occupied by the New York Life Building.
