San Francisco Cable Car Museum and Washington-Mason powerhouse

The Cable Car Museum at the Washington-Mason powerhouse preserves the original winding machinery and houses retired cable cars; it is located at 1201 Mason Street and is open to the public free of charge. The museum contains the actual steam-powered winding wheels and grip equipment that drive the city's remaining cable car lines. It functions both as an operating facility for the cable system and as a museum documenting the system's 19th-century origins.
