Carnegie Library at Mount Vernon Square extended vacancy and reuse

The Carnegie Library, opened in 1903 as Washington's central public library, ceased serving as the main D.C. Public Library branch in the 1970s and experienced long periods of underuse and vacancy through the late 20th and early 21st centuries. After multiple proposals and years of vacancy, the building underwent a major rehabilitation and reopened in 2019 as a mixed-use cultural space including the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., alongside a retail tenant. Its extended disuse and eventual adaptive reuse are well documented in preservation records.
