Washington Aqueduct and Dalecarlia Reservoir

The Washington Aqueduct was constructed under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-19th century (engineered by Lt. Montgomery C. Meigs) to bring potable water to the capital via Dalecarlia and McMillan reservoirs. The Dalecarlia Reservoir and associated intake and pumping facilities at the aqueduct site remain historic elements of the city's early municipal water infrastructure and are managed by the Corps. The Dalecarlia area continues to be a key component of the region's water supply system.
