Madam Walker Legacy Center and the Indiana Avenue jazz corridor

The Madam Walker Legacy Center (originally the Walker Theatre) at this site opened in 1927 and was a principal performance venue on Indianapolis's Indiana Avenue. Indiana Avenue served as the city's primary African American commercial and entertainment district from the 1920s through the 1960s, home to numerous jazz clubs and theaters. The Walker Theatre hosted concerts, community events, and touring jazz acts and remains a preserved landmark of that musical history.
