Esrum Abbey

Esrum Abbey, located near Hillerød in Denmark, is a historic Cistercian monastery founded around 1140. Initially a Benedictine site, it became a Cistercian house in 1151 and served as the mother house for several other abbeys. The abbey has a rich history, including royal patronage and significant architectural developments after fires in the late 12th century. Following the Lutheran Reformation in 1536, it was repurposed for various uses, including a hunting lodge and barracks. Today, the site is a protected national historic monument, featuring a museum and educational facilities, along with leisure activities such as medieval re-enactments. Legends associated with the abbey, including tales of healing springs and encounters with royalty, add to its allure. Additionally, the famous Esrum cheese is named after this historic site.
