St. John's Church, Helsinki

St. John's Church, located in the Ullanlinna district of Helsinki, is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture designed by Adolf Melander. Completed between 1888 and 1891, it is the largest stone church in Finland, seating 2,600 people. The church features impressive twin towers that rise 74 meters high and is renowned for its excellent acoustics, making it a popular venue for concerts and events. The altarpiece, depicting Saul's conversion, is a notable work by Eero Järnefelt. Recently renovated in 2022, the church's gargoyles were restored to preserve their beauty against the harsh Finnish weather. Additionally, the church houses a historic organ, originally built in 1891 and expanded by composer Oskar Merikanto, now featuring 66 stops and over 4,000 pipes, alongside a newly installed English-style shell organ.
