St Joseph's Orphanage

St Joseph's Orphanage, a Grade II listed complex in Preston, Lancashire, was established in 1872 as a welfare provider for Roman Catholic girls. Funded by Maria Holland, it aimed to improve local mortality rates. The site also included Mount Street Hospital, which served the sick and poor, and cared for soldiers during both World Wars. After closing as an orphanage in 1954 and later as a care home in 2003, the complex fell into disrepair, suffering from vandalism and fires. Redevelopment plans began in 2022, aiming to preserve the chapel and tower while creating new housing. The building showcases gothic architecture and has historical significance, including notable figures like George Formby who passed away there.
