McCovey Cove and 'splash hits'

McCovey Cove is the informal name for the section of San Francisco Bay directly beyond right field at Oracle Park, named for Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. Home runs that land in this cove are commonly called 'splash hits,' and fans have long gathered in small boats and kayaks in the cove to attempt retrieval of those balls. The cove has become a distinctive local phenomenon tied to Giants home games and right-field hitting performances.
